County adopts traffic safety initiative while funding major infrastructure upgrades

The Will County Board approved a comprehensive transportation agenda including adoption of Vision Zero principles and multiple road improvement projects totaling millions in construction contracts.

The Vision Zero designation commits the county to eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries through systematic safety improvements and data-driven interventions.

Major Construction Awards

The board awarded PT FO Construction a contract for resurfacing work on Route 6 in County Board District 4, while Austin Tyler Construction received approval for 163rd Street resurfacing projects in districts four and five.

Additional approvals included professional services agreements for pavement management systems and design engineering for Manhattan-Monee Road improvements from US Route 45 to Center Road in District 3.

Grade Separation Project

Transportation funds were approved for design engineering associated with a grade separation project at a railroad crossing on Galaga Road in District 2, addressing long-standing safety and traffic flow concerns.

Right-of-Way Acquisitions

The board authorized multiple professional services agreements for property acquisition related to Larway Road improvements at the US Route 45 intersection, affecting districts two and three.

Additional right-of-way services were approved for improvements along St. Francis Road at the Marley Road intersection in districts two, four, and five.

Joliet Traffic Signal Agreement

An intergovernmental agreement between the City of Joliet and Will County was approved for maintenance of traffic signals on Renwick and Old Renwick Trail, clarifying responsibility for the shared infrastructure.

Transportation Committee Chair Jackie Traynere noted the extensive scope of simultaneous projects: “We have a rather large consent agenda today with multiple awards and professional services agreements.”

The committee’s next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, June 3, at 9 a.m.
