Speed Limits Lowered in Green Garden and Frankfort Neighborhoods
Will County Board Meeting | November 2025
Article Summary: The Will County Board adopted ordinances to establish new, lower speed limits in specific areas of Green Garden and Frankfort Townships. The changes follow engineering investigations determining that statutory speed limits were too high for these roadway conditions.
Speed Zone Key Points:
-
Stuenkel Road (Green Garden): A new 45 MPH zone is established on Stuenkel Road from Scheer Road to U.S. Route 45 (1.14 miles).
-
Lincoln Estates (Frankfort): A 25 MPH speed limit is established for the entire Lincoln Estates subdivision.
-
Affected Streets: Woodvale Road, River Road, Hillside Road, 80th Avenue, 79th Avenue, and 78th Avenue.
-
Reasoning: Traffic studies indicated the basic statutory limits were “greater than that considered reasonable and proper.”
JOLIET – Drivers in Green Garden and Frankfort Townships will see new speed limit signs soon, after the Will County Board voted to alter speed zones on several local roadways to improve safety.
In Green Garden Township, the board approved Speed Zone 705, lowering the limit on Stuenkel Road to 45 MPH. The zone stretches 1.14 miles from Scheer Road (north leg) east to U.S. Route 45.
In Frankfort Township, the board focused on the Lincoln Estates subdivision, establishing 25 MPH speed limits for a network of residential streets (Zones 706 through 711).
The new 25 MPH limits apply to:
-
Woodvale Road: From the western dead end to 78th Avenue.
-
River Road: From U.S. Route 30 to the southern dead end.
-
Hillside Road: From U.S. Route 30 to the southern dead end.
-
80th Avenue: From U.S. Route 30 to the southern dead end.
-
79th Avenue: From U.S. Route 30 to the southern dead end.
-
78th Avenue: From Woodvale Road to the southern dead end.
These changes were recommended by the Will County Division of Transportation following engineering and traffic investigations. The new limits become enforceable once the appropriate signage is erected.
