Early Offense, Stellar Pitching Lift Lincoln-Way West Past Wheaton North, 2-1
The Lincoln-Way West varsity baseball team relied on timely hitting and exceptional pitching to scrape out a tight 2-1 non-conference road victory over Wheaton North on Saturday afternoon.
The Warriors wasted no time manufacturing offense, pushing a run across in the top of the first inning to take an immediate lead. They doubled their advantage in the second frame to make it 2-0. In a defensive battle where hits were at a premium, those early runs ultimately proved to be the difference.
Quinten Lange was the primary spark plug for the Lincoln-Way West offense. He went 2-for-3 at the plate, scored a run, and wreaked havoc on the basepaths by swiping a pair of stolen bases. Michael Pettit also reached base safely twice with a hit and a walk, adding a run scored and a stolen base of his own. Jackson Mansker delivered the heaviest blow of the day for the Warriors, lacing an RBI double to help build the early cushion.
On the mound, starting pitcher Jackson Heinlen set a dominant tone to earn the victory. Heinlen tossed four scoreless innings, scattering four hits and a walk while striking out three Wheaton North batters.
When Heinlen’s day was done, Luke Gouty took over in relief and seamlessly locked down the game to earn the save. Gouty pitched three highly effective innings, allowing just three hits and zero walks while striking out two. Wheaton North managed to push across one unearned run in the bottom of the seventh inning to cut the deficit to 2-1, but Gouty shut the door on the comeback attempt to secure the win.
The Lincoln-Way West defense was flawless behind their pitching staff, committing zero errors on the day and turning in a clean performance to strand six Wheaton North runners.
