Phillips’ 17 Strikeouts, Power Surge Lift Carterville Past Lincoln-Way West 5-1

Senior pitcher C. Phillips delivered a dominant performance in the circle on Friday, striking out an astounding 17 batters to lead the Carterville varsity softball team to a 5-1 neutral-site tournament victory over Lincoln-Way West. Backed by a trio of home runs, Phillips completely overpowered the opposing lineup from the first pitch to the final out.

Carterville wasted no time providing their ace with run support. The offense erupted in the bottom of the first inning, blasting their way to a quick 3-0 advantage. Taryn Ford, Colbie Bennett, and Savannah Gibbs each launched home runs during the contest to provide all of Carterville’s run production.

Ford and Bennett served as a devastating tandem in the Carterville lineup, each finishing 2-for-3 at the plate. Ford drove in a pair of runs and scored once, while Bennett added an RBI, a run scored, and drew a walk. Gibbs made her lone hit of the day count, driving in two runs with her blast to help build the early cushion.

Armed with a comfortable lead, Phillips was virtually untouchable. The senior workhorse tossed a complete-game gem, allowing just two hits and a single walk while facing 24 batters. Her 17 strikeouts kept the Lincoln-Way West lineup completely off balance and suffocated any chance of a comeback. The only blemish on Phillips’ line came in the top of the fifth inning, when Lincoln-Way West managed a solo home run to break up the shutout.

Carterville immediately answered that lone run in the bottom of the fifth. The offense pushed a pair of runs across the plate to reestablish a commanding four-run lead at 5-1, firmly putting the game out of reach. Defensively, both teams played a remarkably clean game, committing zero errors throughout the afternoon.
