A monster offensive performance by Jacob Howard wasn’t enough to propel the Lincoln-Way West varsity baseball team to victory, as they fell 6-4 to Southside in a hard-fought neutral-site contest. Despite playing flawless defense and consistently putting pressure on the basepaths, the Warriors could not overcome Southside’s timely hitting in the middle innings.

Southside, Alabama, established an early advantage, pushing a pair of runs across the plate in the top of the first inning. Lincoln-Way West immediately responded in the bottom half of the frame, scratching across a single run to cut the deficit to 2-1 and set the tone for a competitive afternoon.

The game remained tight until the top of the fourth inning when Southside’s offense found its rhythm. The visitors mounted a crucial three-run rally, extending their lead to 5-1. Lincoln-Way West refused to fold, answering with a run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 5-2.

After Southside tacked on what proved to be the game-winning insurance run in the top of the fifth, the Warriors staged their biggest threat of the day. Lincoln-Way West plated two runs in the bottom of the fifth to trim the deficit to 6-4, shifting the momentum back to their dugout. However, the Southside pitching staff managed to bear down in the final two frames, holding the Warriors scoreless to secure the win.

Lincoln-Way West’s lineup was anchored by a spectacular individual effort from Jacob Howard. Howard was a constant menace at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Michael Pettit also turned in a stellar performance from the top of the order, going 3-for-4 and scoring a run to set the table for the Warriors.

On the mound, Jackson Heinlen took the loss for Lincoln-Way West after battling through 3.2 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out two. Emmett Carlson provided solid relief, giving up just one run on two hits over 2.1 innings of work.

Despite committing four fielding errors on the day, Southside managed to pitch out of jams when it mattered most, stranding eight Lincoln-Way West baserunners to escape with the 6-4 victory.
