Late Rally Propels Lincoln-Way East Past Lincoln-Way West 8-6
The Lincoln-Way East varsity softball team staged a dramatic late-game comeback on Friday, erasing a five-run deficit to defeat conference rival Lincoln-Way West 8-6 on the road.
Lincoln-Way West controlled the early stages of the contest, surging ahead with a three-run first inning and adding three more in the fourth to build a commanding 6-1 lead. The hosts tallied nine hits on the afternoon and appeared poised to protect their home field.
However, Lincoln-Way East refused to back down. The visitors’ offense fully awakened in the late innings, stringing together a relentless attack that ultimately produced a game-high 14 hits.
The comeback began in earnest during the fifth inning, when Lincoln-Way East plated three crucial runs to cut the deficit to 6-4. In the top of the sixth, the visitors struck the decisive blow, exploding for four runs to take their first lead of the game at 8-6. From there, the Lincoln-Way East pitching staff and defense clamped down, tossing two scoreless frames to securely close out the victory.
With the win, Lincoln-Way East improved its impressive overall record to 12-4, while Lincoln-Way West fell to 15-5 on the season.
