(The Center Square) – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security says U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers have arrested a Guatemalan national who was released by Illinois officials even though he was in the country illegally and charged with child sex abuse.

DHS said in a statement that ICE arrested Erik Giovanni Quiroa on April 22 after he attempted to flee in his vehicle. Giovanni Quiroa was convicted last year for aggravated sexual abuse of a 5-year-old child and sentenced to three years in prison.

DHS said Gov. J.B. Pritzker and his fellow Illinois politicians released Giovanni Quiroa into the community even though ICE had lodged a detainer with the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Giovanni Quiroa was previously convicted of aggravated battery with a firearm in 2011 and sentenced to 16 years in prison.

CWB Chicago reports that Jeron Tate, 18, was arrested by a U.S. Marshals task force on Thursday and charged with armed robbery, kidnapping and aggravated battery in connection with the incident at a Family Dollar store.

PRITZKER TO FULFILL DUTIES, PAUSE PUBLIC EVENTS AFTER PROCEDURE

The governor’s deputy chief of staff for communications, Matt Hill, said in a statement provided to The Center Square that Pritzker completed a routine outpatient urology procedure.

Hill said the governor would fulfill his duties but pause public events for the next week while he rests.
