Manhattan Township is advancing two major bridge reconstruction projects, with one heading to bid for $1.6 million and another already past the halfway point of construction, the township board learned on Tuesday, July 8, 2025.

In his monthly report, Highway Commissioner Jim Baltas announced that the Kankakee Bridge reconstruction project is now officially out for bid. The bid opening is scheduled for July 16, with the project carrying an estimated price tag of $1.6 million. This marks a critical step in moving the long-planned infrastructure upgrade toward the construction phase.

Baltas also provided a positive update on the Baker Road Bridge project, reporting that the reconstruction is now 55% complete. The project has been underway for several months and is progressing on schedule, aiming to restore a key local transportation link for residents. Both projects represent a significant investment in maintaining and improving the township’s rural road and bridge network.
