Library’s ‘Studio’ Draws Record Crowds with New Tech and Creative Programs

NEW LENOX – The New Lenox Public Library’s creative hub, The Studio, is experiencing a surge in popularity, shattering attendance records and successfully launching new technology-driven programs, according to a staff report at the May 19 Board of Trustees meeting.

Studio Manager John Morgan reported that a recent “Maker Day” event was a “huge success,” drawing 585 attendees, a figure 38% higher than a typical Saturday at the library. The event’s success is part of a larger trend, with The Studio recording a record 1,883 visits in the past month.

This enthusiastic public response is being driven by an expansion of hands-on, creative offerings. The Studio recently held its first-ever classes for its laser cutter and a new knitting class, both of which were well-received. It also rolled out a new on-demand 3D printing service, allowing patrons to choose from a selection of items that can be printed in 30 minutes or less.

The library is leveraging this positive momentum by bringing back popular presenters, such as Hawaii Fluid Art and The Candle Vault, for regular programming due to “overwhelmingly positive responses” from the community. A beginner’s class for Adobe Photoshop has also been added to the schedule.

The Studio is not only serving the general public but also engaging in community partnerships. Morgan noted that staff recently helped a local Girl Scout Troop complete the requirements for their digital photography badge and created thank-you mugs for the Village of New Lenox.

The activity highlights the library’s strategic push to position itself as a center for modern skills and creative exploration. In addition to classes and events, The Studio also provided an April “Poet-tree” book display in the library’s main lobby and drew inspiration for future services from attending the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2).

The report demonstrates a clear return on the library’s investment in its maker space, transforming it into a vibrant and essential resource that is actively drawing new and repeat visitors of all ages.
